It wasnt to be: The Dancer and the Thief [El Baile de la Victoria ], the film selected by the Spanish Film Academy in the run-up to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film wasnt among the pre-selection of nominees by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood. However, Spanish representation continues through two productions, Juan Jose Campanellas The Secret in Their Eyes [El Secreto de Sus Ojos ] and Claudia Llosas The Milk of Sorrow [La Teta Asustada ], presented by the film academies of Argentina and Peru, respectively, but with high percentages of Spanish participation in both productions.
The two films face tough competition with works like The White Ribbon [Die Wieße Band ], winner of the Palme dOr for Best Foreign Film at Cannes, by Austrian director Michael Haneke and A Prophet [Un Profete ], by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, recipient of the Grand Prize of the Jury at the same festival, in the running. On February 2, the Academy of Hollywood will announce the names of the five finalists.
